Medical Camp at Carey Island

Dear All!

It's to my REGRET that the CAREY MEDICAL CAMP has been TEMPORARILY POSTPONED to a tentative date which will be informed in the near future.

The estate management has called off this PROJECT as they have received a short notice from their HQ to receive a VVIP on the same day we are hosting the MEDICAL CAMP. They have been instructed to cancel all activities for the weekend including "DINNER WITH RAKYAT" which has been organised by the Selangor State Government to thank the constituents for their recent success in General Election.

I personally take this moment to CONVEY MY SINCERE APOLOGIES to ALL OF YOU who have geared up for the weekend with a lot of ANTICIPATION & EXCITEMENT. I understand some of you have postponed and differed your activities to accommodate for this SERVICE PROJECT. Some of our Doctors and Volunteers attached to the Hospitality Industry have even taken their time off to make themselves available for the above date.

Once AGAIN! PLEASE KINDLY ACCEPT MY APOLOGIES! We will always strive to do OUR BEST. However, sometimes I understand that certain events are not within our control. My concern here is that WE WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT all activities hosted by AMURT in future. Hopefully, events like this shall not demoralise us!

Yours BROTHERLY,
Saravanan AK
Project Coordinator & VP Amurt WP & S'ngor

FREE MEDICAL CAMP in CAREY ISLAND

FREE MEDICAL CAMP in CAREY ISLAND

AMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team) W.P & Selangor is again organising a FREE MEDICAL CAMP for a group of underprivileged villagers in Carey Island on 22nd June 08.

Carey Island or Pulau Carey is an island in Selangor, Malaysia. Carey Island is located to the south of Port Klang and north of Banting town. It is a huge island separated from the Selangor coast by the Klang River, connected by a bridge from Chondoi and Teluk Panglima Garang near Banting. It was named after Valentine Carey, a former British civil service officer in Malaya. Despite its name, many locals from Klang do not consider it a real island due to its proximity to the mainland and the river that separates it from the mainland is practically a stream.

It is famous for its seafood such as crabs, prawns, and various fishes. The island has palm oil plantations owned by Sime Plantations. It is an initial settlement area for the Mah-Meri, one of the aborigine Orang Asli tribes of Malaysia. They have assimilated into modern life, with jobs in the nearby plantations and farms, but they retain their unique culture and way of life. Apart from exhibitions of their traditional dances and music, the Mah Meri are particularly known for their votive sculptures, fashioned from a kind of swamp hardwood known as "Nyireh Batu".

In contrast to the colourful and fascinating stories of the great seafood and the indigenous Mah Meri (pronounced Mak Mri) people who have a reputation for some of the world's finest wooden masks in Carey Island, there is a whole lot of different story and drama happening inside the plantation itself. To quote from a reliable but anonymous source, a good number of the plantation workers in this Island are indulged in a fleet of immoral activities ranging from human trafficking to drug trafficking! Hailing from the lower income group of society, these people are pushed off their limits to participate in these kind of activities which gives instant gratification. Moreover, HEALTH AWARENESS is also found to be almost NIL. The 13 divisions of this plantation are interconnected via laterite roads. (Please note that the island is 2/3 the size of Singapore). The assessors of this site were actually lucky as they received a warm welcome from the Senior Assistant Manager of the Plantation Tuan Rasin who then brought them in a tour navigating through the undulating, bumpy RED ROUTES of the Plantation.

Responding to the situation narrated above, AMURT decided that it should try connecting to the community via a MEDICAL CAMP first. The medical camp will create an avenue to get to know the community in close and enabling it later to proceed with some relevant follow-up projects. A rough estimate of the population in the island is expected surpassing 3,000 people comprising ethnic Indians of Malaysian Nation, Indians from India, Indonesians and of course the Orang Asli. However, our expected audience for this camp is projected at 10% of the population.

So WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Allow me to interject before your mind goes saying $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$..........

We are certainly not collecting funds from your kind selves this time for the Medical Camp! (Your Overwhelming Support by means of fund and time for our previous Medical Camp will never be forgotten)

………….Nevertheless, if you INSIST in pledging for our future activities, you are always welcomed. (Tentatively a Motivational Camp is planned in the month of July for a group of Std. 6 children in a plantation located in Batang Berjuntai)

Medical Camp at Bukit Darah, Sungai Buloh

AMURT/AMURTEL’s medical camp conducted in partnership with UMIC (United Malaysian Indian Club) on Sunday, 4th May 2008 at Bukit Darah, Sungai Buloh, was a great success. Our team of doctors and nurses (including a team from the Sg. Buloh Klinik Kesihatan) attended to a total of 221 patients – 72 girls, 72 boys, 54 women and 23 men. The services provided included vision checks, de-worming medication and pap smear tests, among others. Those needing further medical attention have been given referrals. The children were also given t-shirts and biscuits and milk drinks.
The female populations in Malaysia are generally reluctant to undergo the pap smear test. We are therefore particularly pleased to report that we achieved a total of 35 women who took the pap smear test.

AMURT/AMURTEL in partnership with UMIC (United Malaysian Indian Club) conducted an overnight motivational camp for the Standard 6 students of Bukit Darah Tamil Primary School on 3-4 May 2008 (Saturday and Sunday). The objective of this camp is to instill confidence and determination in the students so that they will do well at the year-end UPSR examinations. We are pleased to report that the students responded very positively to the motivational camp and are all psyched up to meet their big exams.
The principal of Bukit Darah Tamil Primary School has invited us to conduct a yoga exercise and educational program for the school. Free Medical Camp

Dear all,

AMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team) KL is organising a FREE MEDICAL CAMP for a group of underprivileged villagers in BUKIT DARAH, Sungai Buloh on the 4th May 2008. Dr. Prakash and his team of volunteer doctors will conduct the medical camp in SJK(T) Bukit Darah because the target group of the medical camp include the schoolchildren and their parents.

From our survey and a dialogue session with the Head Mistress of the school, we found out that the children will need DEWORMING MEDICATION. Some of them are dependent on the free food distribution given to them in the school (RMT- Rancangan Makanan Tahunan) and we are told that some of them go without a proper meal during weekends! Many of them are undernourished.

Many of these kids are the products of broken homes and they are supported by single mothers whose husbands have either abandoned them, or are in jail, or have died prematurely from alcohol-related or other health problems. Concerned for the poor mothers of the community, the HM also asked us to provide FREE PAP SMEARS and BREAST EXAMINATION for the women. Since these women are from the hardcore poor, they do not have their own transport and are unable to go to the nearby Hospital which is approximately 15 km away to get these tests done. They are also daily wage earners and cannot afford to take a day off in order to attend to their medical needs. Most of them earn less than RM 500.

So WHAT CAN WE DO?

CAN YOU SPONSOR A CHILD or A MUM?

We have 200 CHILDREN who need deworming; 50 MUMS who need pap smears, and 50 other adults who need general medical check-ups.
Cost per child is RM 5
Cost per mum is RM 30
Cost per man is RM 5

Please PLEDGE your donation by SENDING AN SMS to the volunteers below. We will contact you in person to collect your KIND DONATION! You can also hand in your donation to the acharyas during weekly DC. THANK YOU!
